Union Berlin: Jamie Leweling “wouldn’t reject” VfB Stuttgart’s stay

Borrowed with option to purchase

In mid-July, Jamie Leweling moved from Union Berlin to VfB Stuttgart on loan. The 22-year-old right winger wanted to go to the Swabians with the prospect of more playing time. Even if there is still a need for optimization after 200 minutes on the pitch so far, Leweling can clearly imagine a longer commitment to VfB.

“Yes, I feel comfortable here. I get enough playing time and I think Stuttgart is the right place to develop further in peace. The club has a young team and the coach relies on young talent. So why not? If I continue to show good performances and Union and VfB come to an agreement, I wouldn’t refuse,” said the 22-year-old in a “Sky” interview.

The two-footed Leweling moved from SpVgg Greuther Fürth to Union in 2022 for 4 million euros, but only played 327 minutes for the “Iron” – the professional came in as a joker in each of his 25 games and scored two goals. So far there have been two starting eleven appearances in the VfB jersey, plus six from the bench. It wasn’t enough for a goal or an assist.

TM Community: Praise and criticism for VfB Stuttgart’s new signing Jamie Leweling

TM user and VfB fan “Admiral_Iblis” gave a positive verdict after the 2-0 away win against 1. FC Köln on September 30th: “I actually thought he was quite good for his starting eleven debut. It is clear that there can and will be more to come. But he is particularly important defensively and also had a few good options up front. Feel free to play again.” “MafloN” is more critical of Leweling’s performance: “Difficult. I have the feeling that with him it’s like with Führich in the last few years: the knot just doesn’t want to break yet. He has potential, but at the moment I see little reason to give him more playing time than before, even if Silas is not that strong at the moment. I still think it’s better than Leweling.”

On Saturday (3:30 p.m.) there will be a direct Bundesliga duel with his parent club Union. “I’m really looking forward to the game. It’s great to see some familiar faces again. Of course I want to deliver a strong performance with VfB and show what the Unioners have lost. I want to show what I can do,” said Leweling, who can stay in Stuttgart permanently with the help of an agreed purchase option.
