Union Berlin before left-back transfer – Gießelmann whereabouts was an option

Gosens, Jakobs & Co. in focus

“Niko will go at the end of this season, the memory of the god on the flanks will remain.” With these words, 1. FC Union Berlin said goodbye to Niko Gießelmann at the end of May, who had previously worked on the left for three years – for a long time as a regular . As Transfermarkt learned, an extension of the expiring contract was still a serious option for the club and the player. However, the “Iron” are about to sign a new left-back to compete with Jérôme Roussillon (30). Therefore, it is now finally clear that the paths of the Champions League participant and the 31-year-old will separate.

When asked by TM, Gießelmann confirmed talks with the club after the end of the season: “That’s right, I was in constant contact with Union even after my official farewell. Until recently, a contract extension with the Champions League club was a big issue.”

Gießelmann successor at Union Berlin: talks with Gosens

It is not yet known who signed Union. A possible move from national player Robin Gosens to the Alte Försterei has been the hottest topic of discussion in recent days. The 28-year-old still has a contract with Inter Milan until 2026, but he is not set for the Champions League finalists and has mostly come as a joker in recent months. Regular playing time at a high level that Union could offer would be valuable for Gosens with regard to the EM 2024 in their own country.

“Kicker” and “Bild” had recently reported on advanced talks between Gosens and Union. Transfermarkt can confirm that the advisor to the long-time Serie A professional was in Berlin during the week to advance the negotiations. The sticking point for Union would be the financing of the difficult deal with Inter, which Gosens only signed last summer for 27.4 million euros from Atalanta BC. There is now a transfer fee of 15 million to 20 million euros – the Berliners have never paid a double-digit million sum before. Both “Kicker” and “Bild” therefore bring a loan into play as a possible scenario, after which there could be an obligation to buy. The Nerazzurri would also have to take over part of the salary for the time being.

Ex-Cologne Jakobs and Angers’ Doumbia also traded at Union Berlin

Other names that have been traded in the TM rumor mill are ex-Cologne player Ismail Jakobs (23), who is tied to AS Monaco until 2026, and Ivorian international Souleyman Doumbia (26). The latter has the advantage of being a free transfer, with Doumbia’s contract at Ligue 1 relegated Angers SCO expiring. With a market value of €3m, he would be the least prominent of the solutions traded so far for the post on the left the “iron”. But they have proven in the past that they can celebrate success with such transfers.

Jakobs, meanwhile, has enjoyed a season at Monaco that he spent largely as a substitute. The ex-DFB youth national player, who is meanwhile playing for Senegal, still has a total of 41 appearances in the Principality (4 assists). In winter he had not ruled out a return to the Bundesliga.

Gießelmann’s future after Union Berlin open – talks are ongoing

Where Gießelmann, who played 36 games in all competitions for Union in the 2022/23 season and thus made a decisive contribution to the first Champions League qualification, is still open. The former professional from Hannover 96, Greuther Fürth and Fortuna Düsseldorf is already in talks with interested clubs. The “Bild” had connected him with FC St. Pauli in May.
