Ukraine claims up to kilometers of territory in Bachmoet: “We are on the attack again” | War Ukraine and Russia

The odds in Bachmoet have turned. At least that is what the Ukrainian armed forces claim. Attacking instead of defending. Wagner boss Prigozhin confirms Ukrainian advance.

Ukraine has gained between 200 and 1,100 meters of ground around Bachmoet in a day, reports the Ukrainian Deputy Minister of Defense. “Our forces have changed from a defensive to an offensive approach towards Bachmut,” she said on Telegram.

The claimed territorial gain cannot be independently verified. Russia’s defense minister says a series of Ukrainian attacks around Bachmut “did not succeed”.

Both the Ukrainian authorities and the boss of the Russian Wagner group stated earlier this month that the Ukrainians are increasingly gaining ground around the hotly contested city of Bachmut. Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin says he has almost completely withdrawn his own troops from around the eastern Ukrainian city.

Ukrainian authorities have said for months that they are preparing a major counter-offensive to drive Russian troops out of the occupied territories in Ukraine. According to the Russians, that counteroffensive has now started and they are repelling major attacks in various places. Ukraine often puts the scale of the offensive actions into perspective, except for the one near the destroyed city of Bachmut.

“Why are the Russians actively publishing information about a counter-offensive? Because they have to divert attention from their defeat at Bachmut,” Ukraine’s deputy defense minister recently said. “The Bachmoet sector remains the epicenter of hostilities,” said Hanna Maljar. “On a fairly broad front, we are moving forward and achieving success.”

Just last month, the Russians took control of Bachmoet after months of heavy fighting. But according to Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin, “part of the village of Berkhivka, north of Bachmut, has already been lost”, which he says is a “shame”. He took advantage of the loss to once again lash out at Valeri Gerasimov, commander of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu.
