In the best case scenario, the winners can earn 5.1 million euros. According to UEFA, a total of 41 million euros will be distributed, which is more than twice as much as for the 2022 European Championship. At that time, 16 million euros were paid out to the teams.

The associations are obliged by UEFA to pass on between 30 and 40 percent of the bonuses earned to the players. From the knockout round onwards it should be at least 35 percent.

When exactly will the European Championships take place?

The opening game is scheduled for July 2nd in Basel. The final will take place in the same stadium on July 27th.

What problems are there?

For the first time, a major men’s tournament could cost the women’s European Championship attention. FIFA’s new men’s Club World Cup will be held with 32 teams. This is the first time that a men’s tournament has taken place in the summer of an odd year.

Teams like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Manchester City will then compete in the Women’s European Championship. The men’s Club World Cup doesn’t end until July 15th – after the end of the group phase at the European Championships.

Where will the next European Championship take place?

That hasn’t been decided yet. The DFB is applying for the 2029 tournament, but has a lot of competition. Italy, Portugal, Poland as well as Denmark and Sweden in a joint application also want the tournament.

Associations interested in hosting must submit their preliminary application documents to UEFA by March 12, 2025, with the deadline for receipt of legal documents and additional documentation ending on August 28, 2025. The host is expected to be announced by the UEFA Executive Committee in December 2025.

According to the DFB, 17 German cities have registered for the selection process to host games at a possible tournament in Germany:

  • Berlin
  • Bremen
  • Dortmund
  • Dusseldorf
  • Eat
  • Frankfurt
  • Freiburg
  • Gelsenkirchen
  • Hamburg (Volksparkstadion)
  • Hanover
  • Cologne
  • Leipzig
  • Mainz
  • Munich
  • Rostock
  • Stuttgart
  • Wolfsburg

The DFB, together with the Netherlands and Belgium, applied in vain for the 2027 World Cup, but Brazil won the vote in the FIFA Congress.

Who qualified directly?

16 teams are taking part, nine of which qualified directly: In addition to the hosts from Switzerland, the defending champions were England, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Germany.

Austria failed in the playoffs

The field of participants was completed in seven playoff matches. The Austrian team, which had many Bundesliga players, failed at the hands of Poland. Sweden, Belgium, Norway, Wales, Finland and Portugal also prevailed.
