UEFA decides on final venue of EM 2024 – Newsticker

Berlin confident of victory, memory of the rainbow debate in Munich

Berlin is confident of victory. “I can only say to everyone who is wondering what the right answer is: This is Berlin”, said the Governing Mayor of the capital, Franziska Giffey, the German Press Agency. “As a sports metropolis, we are simply the city that is best suited to shine internationally for an event like this.” She therefore very much hopes that UEFA will choose Germany’s largest city.

Munich is the strongest competitor, awards in football are always considered politically influenced decisions. Munich with the stadium of record champion FC Bayern hosted four games of the pan-European championship last summer. The debate, not only in the football world, about the rainbow lighting of the stadium during the world event as a sign of solidarity had driven a wedge between UEFA and the city management. UEFA wanted to be politically neutral – very few could understand that.

Draw in December 2023

The draw for the qualification will take place on October 9, 2022 in the Festhalle in Frankfurt am Main. The final draw is to take place in December 2023 in the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, the international media center will be in Leipzig.
