The Thread wireless protocol has seen slow adoption in both private and professional installations. While Wi-Fi is ubiquitous, relatively few networks support the necessary Border Router for Thread connectivity. Ubiquiti, a prominent manufacturer in networking technology, is aiming to change this. The upcoming SuperLink Gateway HA is expected to include a Border Router, integrating Thread into one of the most widely used network infrastructures among semi-professional and professional users.
Ubiquiti’s Push into Thread Connectivity
It’s important to temper expectations regarding the implications of Ubiquiti’s plans. While the company is incorporating Thread into its UniFi platform, it has not positioned itself as a native Matter provider. Currently, there are no announcements concerning direct support for the Matter standard, nor is it clear how the internal Border Router will integrate into the UniFi software. This lack of clarity extends to whether Thread devices from other ecosystems (like Matter, HomeKit, Google, or SmartThings) can be configured through the UniFi system.
What we do know is that the support for Thread will occur primarily at the network level. UniFi already employs technologies crucial for device recognition that underpin the Matter standard. However, proper configuration is vital for seamless data flow, as items such as mDNS and multicast must be correctly set up. Restrictive settings that hinder routing between VLANs can lead to traffic disruptions. The introduction of a Border Router in UniFi systems promises to mitigate such issues going forward.
The SuperLink Gateway HA: A Powerful Combination
The SuperLink Gateway HA enhances UniFi networks by incorporating Thread functionality alongside its namesake feature, Ubiquiti’s proprietary SuperLink technology. Initially introduced in January 2025, SuperLink operates in the sub-GHz range (915.6–927.6 MHz in the USA, 865.1–869.5 MHz in the EU) and claims to offer several kilometers of coverage, along with impressive wall penetration capabilities. This protocol is utilized within motion detectors, door and glass break sensors, smoke and CO detectors, environmental sensors, as well as relay and siren modules—all of which can be integrated through the UniFi OS interface.
The upcoming Gateway serves as an evolution of its predecessor, with three significant enhancements:
- Built-in Battery: An integrated 11.8 Wh battery provides approximately 2.2 hours of backup during power outages.
- LTE Module: A cellular backup option if the primary internet connection fails.
- Thread Border Router: Capable of supporting up to 128 connected devices.
However, the release notes indicate the removal of the Bluetooth connection option from the previous model, which facilitated the inclusion of older UniFi Protect sensors. Thus, the Gateway remains primarily a SuperLink device for UniFi security sensors, with the Thread chip being an added feature. This shift could suggest that Thread is gradually replacing the Bluetooth standard within UniFi systems.
The Future of Thread with Ubiquiti
The full capabilities of Ubiquiti’s Border Router are still uncertain; it may either serve merely as infrastructure for future proprietary SuperLink/Thread devices or act as a comprehensive, manufacturer-agnostic Thread Border Router compatible with the Matter protocol. Regardless, this development signifies a meaningful milestone, as Thread officially enters a networking product line favored by professionals and semi-professionals globally.
Should Ubiquiti indeed open up its Border Router for third-party devices, it could significantly elevate the relevance of Thread in a market predominantly controlled by consumer hubs like Apple TV, Google Nest, or Amazon Echo. The implications for interoperability, device responsiveness, and network reliability could be transformative, ushering in an era where smart home devices are seamlessly integrated across diverse ecosystems, powered by Thread.
