Two penalties taken back: Magdeburg is also struggling against efficient Elversberger

As of: October 29, 2023 3:49 p.m

Particularly because of a weak first half, the crisis of 1. FC Magdeburg, which had been without ideas for a long time, worsened against an efficient SV Elversberg. FCM coach Tietz also gave captain Condé and top scorer Schuler the maximum penalty: substitution after a good 30 minutes.

On Sunday (October 29th, 2023), the newcomer from Saarland won 2-1 (2-0) in Magdeburg. Jannik Rochelt (12th) and Maurice Neubauer (35th) scored for the disciplined Elversberger, against whom the FCM played at a loss for a long time with clear possession advantages. FCM joker Connor Krempicki fueled hope again with his connecting goal (70th).

Tietz pissed off: captain replaced early

In the first ever competitive game between the two teams, Magdeburg took immediate control. The hosts tried to create, the guests tried to prevent and counterattack quickly. This plan proved more successful in the first half. An exemplary counterattack from Elversberg via Luca Schnellbacher and Rochelt brought the lead.

Two early changes showed how pissed off FCM coach Christian Tietz was with his team’s performance: both captain Amara Condé and Magdeburg’s top goalscorer, Luca Schuler, were able to take a shower after just over half an hour. Luc Castaignos and Silas Gnaka came (34th).

Schnellbacher with second assist against unsorted FCM

However, the new players were just getting involved in the game when the ball was in the Magdeburg net again shortly afterwards.

Defensively completely unsorted, the FCM ran after a game shift – Schnellbacher was once again the assist – to left-back Neubauer’s side. The latter scored with a low shot and celebrated his first professional goal. Three Elversberg shots on goal, two goals: The promoted team was efficient, while Magdeburg hardly got into any promising finishing positions.

Magdeburg more dangerous after the restart

The half-time speech by FCM coach Tietz, who sent Andi Hoti and Krempicki onto the field for Jamie Lawrence and Alexander Nollenberger for the second half (46th), was probably a little louder. Because after the restart, Magdeburg put the pressure on. Gnaka and Krempicki missed a double chance (47th).

In the first four minutes of the second half, FCM had four shots on goal – more than in the previous 45 minutes. However, it was bitter for Magdeburg: Joker Castaignos had to leave the field again due to injury, Tatsuya Ito was allowed to play (57th).

Krempicki gives FCM hope by taking back two penalties

Things almost came to a head for the FCM: referee Lukas Benen pointed to the penalty spot, and Leon Bell Bell was also given a yellow card for slipping away from Manuel Feil. But after VAR intervention, Benen reversed the decision – ball played.

Instead, Magdeburg finally found a way through in the person of Krempicki, the Joker scored the deserved goal with a direct pass. But more was not possible for the FCM despite a clear preponderance of possession.

Ito tried to avoid a penalty with a dive, but referee Benen also decided on a penalty in his first impulse. But the VAR intervened again, whereupon Benen withdrew the penalty and showed the Japanese player yellow (90th + 4).
