Two men have been arrested on suspicion of stabbing the late Ian Watkins, singer of the band Lostprophets and convicted pedophile, to death in prison. According to the BBC, there are two suspects aged 25 and 43. The police have not yet revealed their identities. The murder investigation is ongoing. Authorities have said there will be no further comment until the investigation is complete.
Watkins was killed on Saturday at the age of 48 at HMP Wakefield Prison in West Yorkshire, England. The former singer was serving a 29-year prison sentence there after pleading guilty to 13 charges, including attempted rape of a fan’s baby and producing child pornography.
Watkins had already been attacked in prison by three other inmates in August 2023. He suffered injuries to his neck that required hospital treatment. HMP Wakefield is considered one of England’s most notorious prisons and is known as the “Monster Mansion” because of its inmates – including serial killers, murderers and paedophiles.
Report on the security situation in the prison
As the BBC further reports, Watkins’ death came just weeks after a report by the Chief Inspector of Prisons found that there had been a “significant increase” in the number of attacks at HMP Wakefield. “Many prisoners told us they felt unsafe, particularly older men who had been convicted of sexual offenses and were increasingly having to live with a growing number of younger prisoners,” it said.
Further convictions and incidents
In 2019, Watkins was sentenced to an additional ten months in prison after a cell phone was found in his possession. He explained that he was forced to keep the device by other prisoners.
Out of fear, he did not name the prisoners in question, saying he had been locked up with “murderers, mass murderers, rapists, pedophiles, serial killers – the worst of the worst.”
