Two killed by avalanche in French Alps | Abroad

Two skiers have died after being caught in an avalanche at the foot of Mont Blanc in the French Alps. This is reported by the prefecture of Haute-Savoie. One person was slightly injured, five others are unharmed.

The accident happened when the group was skiing off-piste on Thursday afternoon near the municipality of Saint-Gervais-les-Bains. A total of 31 emergency workers were sent to the scene to help the eight skiers.

The fatalities are said to be a man and a woman. According to TF1, it concerns “two family members from abroad”.

The 400 meter long avalanche occurred at an altitude of approximately 2,300 meters. At 4,808 meters, Mont Blanc is the highest mountain in the Alps. An investigation was opened into the circumstances of the tragedy.
