Two Hilversum children died in a collision with a wrong-way driver on the A1

Three people were killed in a collision with a wrong-way driver last night around 10 p.m. on the A1 at the Hoevelaken junction in Amersfoort. Among the fatalities are two children aged 12 and 14 from Hilversum.

The children’s parents were seriously injured and taken to hospital. The police report that they are in a worrying condition.

The wrong-way driver himself, a 19-year-old man from Romania, was also injured in the collision and died in hospital.

Victim support

The first reports of a serious accident came in around 10 p.m. last night. The 19-year-old man appeared to have collided head-on with an oncoming car with his car.

Many emergency services arrived on the scene and the highway was closed in both directions. Bystanders also offered help. The police advise witnesses of the accident to contact victim support.
