On the edge of the game Colo-Colo against Fortaleza, there were bad riots in Santiago de Chile. These cost two people to their lives.
Tragedy in South America: Before the group game in the Copa Libertadores between the Chilean club Colo Colo and the Brazilian team Fortaleza, a terrible incident occurred in Santiago de Chile. Two young people lost their lives.
According to the local authorities, a group of fans had tried to get into the Estadio Monumental by wanting to tear down a protective fence. The police intervened – there was a crowd and the fence fell. According to media reports, the fatalities are said to be an 18-year-old woman and a 13-year-old boy.
It was checked whether a police car might have even run over the victims. According to the public prosecutor, the crew of a armored vehicle will be investigated. As Security Minister Luis Cordero announced, the officials involved were temporarily suspended.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino reacted dismayed to the incident in Chile. On Instagram, the 55-year-old wrote that he was “deeply shaken” about the events and expressed his sympathy for the relatives of the victims. He also condemned violence related to the game: “There must be no violence in football.”
Despite the tragic events, the game was kicked off. Due to further riots and a place storm, the encounter, in which ex-Bundesliga professional Arturo Vidal for Colo Colo was also involved, had to be canceled later.
