Two dogs dumped in the Ameland port, owner leaves by ferry: ‘We are deeply affected’

Two dogs were dumped near the port of Ameland on Sunday evening. The animals were taken care of by the animal ambulance on the island.

The Ameland animal ambulance received a report on Sunday evening that someone had tied two dogs to the bicycle shed at the ferry. The owner is said to have left by boat for the mainland. The volunteers indeed saw two dogs at the harbor that were tied to a fence. The dogs were 9 and 11 years old, the passports showed.

“When we arrived at the ferry dam, we found an extremely sad situation,” the animal ambulance staff wrote Facebook . In the pouring rain, two older dogs were sitting with a strap attached to the bicycle shed, looking around completely displaced. A shopping bag had been placed near the animals containing food, food bowls and the passports of both dogs.’

The volunteers immediately called the police because abandoning animals is a criminal offense. According to the organization, the owner has been arrested in Holwert. “That doesn’t help the poor dogs,” the animal ambulance said. ‘Since there is no suitable shelter on Ameland (certainly not if you take the current weather conditions into account), we had to improvise again. We have found a space for tonight, tomorrow we will start working on finding a suitable place for them.’

The animal ambulance volunteers are ‘deeply affected’ by the situation.
