Two deer killed in one night on the Zeeweg in Overveen: “This will happen more often”

Last night two deer collided with passing cars on the Zeeweg. The first incident happened around 1 a.m., the animal died immediately from its injuries. In the second collision, a deer was seriously injured and was released from its misery moments later. Willem van der Sloot, also called the deer whisperer of Zandvoort, is angry and sad. “This is going to happen a lot more often.”

The first collision took place near the beach of Bloemendaal aan Zee. A 22-year-old motorist, driving in the direction of Haarlem, could no longer avoid the suddenly crossing deer and crashed into it.

The second incident occurred four hours later, just after 5 a.m., about a mile away. The deer was left injured along the road. A motorist had seen the animal and informed the police. The car involved probably drove on after the incident. The injured animal was put out of its misery by ‘a forest ranger’, according to the police.

It is unknown whether either vehicle sustained significant damage.

Deer whisperer Willem ‘sad and angry’

Zandvoort Willem van der Sloot has been busy for a long time about all collisions with deer and roe deer on the Zeeweg. He suspects that the animals flee onto the road, because they are also hunted from autumn, especially during the night. According to Willem, the fences along the road are in poor condition, making it even easier for the animals to get on the road. Despite Willem’s call for attention to this problem, he has not yet found a helping hand anywhere. “You will see that action is only taken when there is a fatal human victim.”

Earlier we made the following report with Willem, which shows how bad the fences along the Zeeweg are in:
