Twenty-six killed in traffic accident in India: tractor with trailer ended up in pond | Abroad

A tractor pulled a trailer carrying pilgrims returning from a shrine. About fifty people were on the trailer, mostly women and children. The tractor overturned and ended up in the pond.

Many road accidents happen in India. Last year, according to official statistics, more than 150,000 people were killed. In reality there may be many more. The roads are often poorly maintained and traffic rules are barely respected.

Particularly in rural regions, it is not uncommon for people to be transported on trailers. The Prime Minister of the state of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, emphasized that a tractor with trailer should only be used for the transport of agricultural products and goods.
