The rescue campaign was started shortly after a shift change at Koksijde’s Air Force Base. The NH90 was in the air within a few minutes after the emergency signal. The divers were spotted near a wreck, spread over small groups on the surface of the sea. Despite the difficult circumstances, the crew managed to pick up seven divers directly with the helicopter. In the meantime, the five others were safely brought on board by other rescue services at sea.
The rescuers were transferred by the NH90 to Koksijde’s Air Force Base, where they received a warm welcome and coffee after their perilous adventure.
According to the Air Force, the action underlines the importance of readiness, cooperation and fast intervention. “Our basis has again shown what it stands for: ready, decisive and determined,” it sounds.
