TV commentator talks about his son’s DFB comeback

Many sports fans in Germany associate the name Stach with tennis, but the name is also becoming more and more important among football fans.
Matthias Stach has been active in sports as a TV commentator and presenter for more than 30 years. He is considered the “voice of tennis” in Germany and reported on all four Grand Slam tournaments. He received the German Television Award several times for his work at Eurosport with tennis legend Boris Becker. Now, however, another Stach is coming into the spotlight – his son Anton. The 27-year-old is celebrating his comeback in the German national football team after almost four years of absence.
The son’s return to the circle of the best German footballers was of course something special for the Stach family. “After the national coach called him, Anton informed us about the nomination via a family call. Logically, we were all incredibly happy for him and were all of the opinion that he deserved it,” reports Matthias Stach when asked by t-online and adds: “My reaction was: ‘Well, then get started!'”
After two appearances in the national team in 2022 under then national coach Hansi Flick, Anton Stach has now been called up to Julian Nagelsmann’s squad for the first time. The midfielder from Premier League club Leeds United is in the DFB squad for the international matches against Switzerland (today 8.45 p.m.) and Ghana (Monday, March 30 at 8.45 p.m.).
Stach can therefore have hopes of taking part in the World Cup in the summer. “I personally believe that Anton brings a profile, also due to the many strong minutes in England, that doesn’t exist in the national team circle. And his standards aren’t that bad either,” Stach senior analyzes his son’s chances of taking part in the tournament in Mexico, Canada and the USA.
While son Anton may be playing for the World Cup, Matthias Stach has other plans for the summer: “In June, the grass season at Eurosport is in full swing. So I’ll probably be in action there.” However, the 63-year-old is still keeping a small back door open: “If everything goes perfectly, you can still consider whether to unpack the travel planner again afterwards. But I’m more pragmatic. Little by little and no excessive expectations, that was and is my credo.”
