It was a real final crime thriller: The triumph of the German national basketball team in the final of the European Championship in Riga was tough. A strong Turkish team offered bitter resistance to the DBB selection, even led over long distances of the game, but in the end had to give up 83:88.

For the German basketball players, a lavish party night began, which ended in the festive reception in Germany the next day. But Turkey also enthusiastically received its team. Trainer Ergo Ataman in particular provided an emotional moment.

At the reception of his team, the 59-year-old, who had been awarded the coach of the tournament, was given a microphone. But Ataman took a while until he could start his speech. He visibly fought with his emotions and could not hold back one or two tears.

At Instagram, Ataman had already spoken emotionally. For a photo of the team at the award ceremony in Riga, he wrote: “The silver medal, which was won after years, is of course a great success, and the Turkish people is proud of these boys. But I’m really sad.”

“The champions always write history, and we just missed it,” the coach continued. He wanted to apologize to the Turkish fans who would have spent the cup with the team. “I am firmly convinced that these young men who have brought Turkish basketball back to the head of Europe will bring this trophy into our country in the near future,” wrote Ataman confidently.
