From last season’s resolver to the misunderstandings with Comolli. The path that led to his dismissal despite the support of the team

The last of Igor Tudor’s big three spells at Juve ended sooner than expected. In the last 218 days spent by the coach in black and white, only at the end did he understand that there was no longer a future with him: the three defeats of the last week were decisive, upon resumption from the October break which should have re-established balance after a period without victories. Juve ended up having eight matches in a row without success, something that in their history had never happened in modern times and which weighed on the ratings. At this point of the season the sporting project should have already had its own identity, but instead the coach – like his players on the sidelines of the defeat against Lazio – implied that he had no explanation for the team’s lack of results.

Tudor was a solver last season, when there was a need to restore serenity to the environment by restoring order according to the historical values of the club. With all the Juventus spirit that characterized him in his first life as a footballer and also in the season in which he acted as Pirlo’s technical collaborator, the coach had a positive impact on the group and obtained the points necessary to gain access to the Champions League, an objective which during the national break in March – when the decision was made to sack Thiago Motta – appeared quite at risk. In the last weeks of the last championship, Igor worked closely with Giuntoli, who had agreed with the coach on some actions on the market already in the extraordinary window of June: the ownership, in the person of Elkann, on that occasion gave the required guarantees on Tudor’s stay, but decided to sack Giuntoli.

with comolli

The new sports management entrusted to Comolli did not call Tudor into question, which was in fact the expression of a choice made by the ownership, but in the summer transfer market it did not always work in line with the coach’s ideas. In the last period the Croatian coach has tried to make people understand some of the group’s limitations from an objective point of view, which evidently did not put him in a position to best develop his idea of the game. Tudor had been promised 2-3 championship shots, the arrivals at the end of the transfer window did not satisfy him and the difficulties in integrating the new players were evident. Even the exploits of the first period – such as the comebacks against Borussia and Inter – never reassured in terms of balance: Tudor was always able to count on the collaboration of the team, which always followed him, but all this was not enough to change course on the results. And Comolli decided to be exonerated.
