TT legend Phil Read, ‘The Prince of Speed’, dies aged 83

MOTORSPORT – Phil Read, one of the most successful TT drivers of all time, has passed away. The MotoGP organization announced this tonight.

The Briton won the TT five times, of which twice in the 125 cc, twice in the 250 cc and once in 500 cc. The Prince of Speed won a total of seven world titles. The 83-year-old Read still rode a motorcycle until three years ago, but due to health problems, he was unable to continue that hobby.

“I have COPD. But if I died now, I would have had a beautiful life,” Read said in September during the Classic Grand Prix in Assen, where RTV Drenthe spoke to him. On the TT Circuit he was again face to face with Italian Giacomo Agostini, his eternal rival.
