US President Donald Trump is threatening Canada with 100 percent tariffs in order to prevent the neighboring country from closer economic cooperation with China.
If Canada makes a deal with China, the country will immediately be hit with a 100 percent tariff on all Canadian goods imported into the USA, the Republican wrote on the Truth Social platform.
If Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney thinks he wants to make Canada a “transshipment point” for China so that Chinese goods come to the USA, he is very wrong. Trump called Carney “governor” – he has long repeatedly portrayed Canada as a US federal state. A governor leads a federal state.
Carney recently traveled to Beijing and then announced more cooperation with China. Both sides agreed on concrete steps in trade. According to a statement from the Canadian government, Ottawa withdrew some of its tariffs on Chinese electric cars. In return, China agreed to reduce trade barriers for Canadian agricultural products such as rapeseed.
