Trump prefers interview on X to Republican election debate | Abroad

Former US President Donald Trump skipped the first debate with the other Republican presidential candidates on Wednesday evening US time. At the same time, former Fox News personality Tucker Carlson broadcast an interview with the former president on X, formerly Twitter. That interview had been viewed more than 74 million times around 4 a.m. Belgian time.

In the previously taped conversation with Carlson, Trump vented his usual grievances. According to him, President Joe Biden is physically and mentally unfit for a second term. “Corrupt Biden is the worst president in our country’s history,” it said, among other things. He also repeated his claim that the 2020 election was tampered with and that the Democrats plan to do so again next year.

He dismissed the various criminal prosecutions hanging over Trump’s head as politically motivated. According to him, his opponents have “turned the justice system into a weapon”.

The storming of the Capitol by his supporters on January 6, 2021, which left five dead, Trump called “an interesting day”. The protesters who gathered in Washington that day were largely “peaceful and patriotic,” he said.

When asked about the Ukraine war, Trump remained blank. He called it a terrible war that should end immediately. “Not for one side or the other, but because hundreds of thousands of people are being killed. If I had been president, that war would never have started.”

Republican Election Debate

The debate with eight other Republican candidates was simulcast on Fox News. Trump has been at odds with the conservative channel since Fox was the first to attribute a win to Biden in the 2020 presidential election in the state of Arizona. “A channel that is not exactly favorable to me. They supported Ron DeSantis (co-candidate and governor of Florida) but he has turned out to be a hopeless case,” Trump said.

Trump was expected to change his mind at the last minute and plan a surprise appearance during the debate, but that did not happen. He said Trump saw no point in being questioned by eight fellow candidates who are far behind him in the polls.
