Donald Trump is seeking to have his permanent suspension on Twitter overturned through an appeal. The former US president was banned from social media after his supporters stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
At the end of October, Trump claimed that he had no desire to return to Twitter at all. He said after Twitter’s new owner, Elon Musk, offered to reinstate the account. Trump said at the time, however, that he wanted to remain loyal to his own service, Truth Social.
It is not surprising that he now returns to it. Trump had more than 80 million followers on Twitter. There are only a few million on Truth Social and that platform is also struggling with financial problems.
A Trump lawyer said Monday that Trump should be “right to go back to work” on Twitter. They are therefore appealing against an earlier court decision, which upheld the Twitter ban in May of this year.
‘Political censorship’
According to Trump’s lawyers, the ban is motivated by “openly partisan censorship” and violates the First Amendment of the US Constitution, which, among other things, guarantees freedom of speech. In addition to compensation, they demand that the former president’s account, which was permanently suspended on January 8, 2021, be reinstated immediately.
Twitter said last year it kicked Trump off the platform “because of the risk of further incitement to violence” after his supporters stormed the US parliament. They tried to prevent the results of the presidential election, which was won by Joe Biden, from being ratified.
