Chinese President Xi receives Trump in Beijing
Chinese President Xi Jinping met his American counterpart Donald Trump on Thursday morning (local time) with a ceremony in Tiananmen Square in the Chinese capital Beijing. The two world leaders shaking hands on a red carpet before the start of their planned meeting in the Grote Volkszaal.
Xi said at the start of the summit meeting that the world is “at a new crossroads.”. “We have to are partners instead of adversarieshelp each other succeed, prosper together and find a proper way for the great countries of the new era to interact with each other,” Xi said, according to the American news channel CNN.
Xi said he is convinced that the common interests between the United States and China outweigh their differences. He also asked whether the two countries have one “new model for relations between great powers” can create. The Chinese president referred to the “Thucydides Trap”a term used to describe the danger of a rivalry between a rising power and an established leading power.
Trump then praised their “fantastic relationship” and said he “so much respect” had for China and Xi, which he had a “great leader” mentioned. He said to the Chinese leader that the two superpowers will have a “fantastic future together”.. “It’s an honor to be with you. It’s an honor to be your friend, and the China-US relationship is becoming better than ever before,” Trump said.
The American President further stated that the American delegation looks forward to meeting the to discuss mutual trade and that it was an honor to be there. In addition to trade, Iran and Taiwan would also be discussed.
Xi greeted Trump just after 10 a.m. local time. Accompanied by Trump, Xi shook hands with several US officials, including Secretary of Defense Peter Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
A Chinese military orchestra then played it American national anthem, The Star-Spangled Bannerfollowed by the Chinese national anthem, as cannons were fired. Schoolchildren waving American and Chinese flags chanted “welcome, welcome” as Trump and Xi walked past them in the square.
The two leaders will enjoy one tonight state banquet in the hall, and Trump will visit the historic Temple of Heavena World Heritage Site where Chinese emperors once prayed for a good harvest.
In addition to Trump administration officials, a delegation of CEOs presentincluding Jensen Huang of Nvidia, Tim Cook of Apple and Tesla founder Elon Musk.
