THEand streets of Washington, Boston and other American cities, came alive with one new edition of People’s Marcha symbolic event born from the historical Women’s March of 2017. Thousands of protesters, mostly women, gathered to express their opinion dissent against President Donald Trumpa few hours after his second inauguration. Thus signs, songs and pink hats once again became protagonists on the occasion of theInauguration Day.
An anti-Trump movement, but not only that
There People’s Marchoriginally known as Women’s Marchhas been redefined to embrace a broader cause. As explained by Tamika Middletongeneral director of the event, the current objective it’s not just contesting Donald Trump, but also fight for women’s rights, climate justice, LGBTQ+ rights and the support for immigrants. “We don’t think of the march as an end, but as a beginning,” said Middleton, underlining the importance of turning protest into concrete action within communities.
Marching to defend rights
TO Washingtonmarchers walked down the National Mall to the Lincoln Memorial. There BBC interviewed Brookea participant, who explained that she took to the streets to support the right to abortion, expressing regret for the current political situation: «I am sad that our country has chosen a president who has already disappointed us once». Kayla, another protester, described her mood as a mix of anger and sadness: “We have to resist, even if it’s hard.”
TO Bostonabout two thousand people gathered at Boston Common park, where local leaders reiterated the importance of values such as feminism, environmental justice and minority rights. Maddie Lee, event promoter, said a NBC: «We are here to celebrate what New England represents, but also to fight against Trump’s destructive policies». Maryrose Mazzola, representative of Planned Parenthood – association that fights in the United States for legislation in favor of abortion – underlined the urgency of collective action: «It’s not just about women, but about all communities under threat».
