Donald Trump, the President of the United States, wants Jordan and Egypt, among others, to host Gaza residents. According to the AP news agency, the president spoke on Saturday of “completely emptying” the Gaza Strip in order to say “you know, it’s over.” The president has already spoken with King Abdullah of Jordan and will call Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Sunday.

During the press moment, he told the journalists present that the relocation of the population in Gaza was “temporary or long-term,” AP writes. By moving Palestinians out of Gaza and settling them in neighboring countries such as Egypt and Jordan, Trump wants to empty the Gaza Strip to, in his words, “create a clean slate.” He calls the area “a mess” and a “demolition site.”

“Something has to be done,” Trump said. “It is literally a ruin there. Almost everything is destroyed and people are dying.” According to news agencies, the president then said that he would prefer to “work together” with some Arab countries to “build homes in another location” where Palestinians from Gaza can “finally live in peace.”

The far-right Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich mentions it on X on Sunday a “great idea” to “help” Palestinians in Gaza “find other places to start a new and better life.” He further writes that he wants to work closely with the Prime Minister and the cabinet “so that an operational plan is drawn up with which this can be implemented as quickly as possible.”

After his inauguration on Monday, Trump said “fantastic things” could be done with Gaza, often referring to the territory’s geographical location on the sea. It is unclear what he means by that.
