Nico Schlotterbeck has impressively gotten back on track at Borussia Dortmund after a long injury break. The national player has already come onto FC Bayern’s transfer radar. Three experts are expecting BVB to leave.

“I still have over a year and a half left on my contract. I will sit down with Sebastian (Kehl, editor’s note), work out a plan and see where it leads,” said Nico Schlotterbeck on the “Sky” microphone after BVB’s 1-2 defeat in the Bundesliga classic at FC Bayern.

And further: “I feel very comfortable in Dortmund and have no problem continuing on this path. But of course it is an important decision for my career.”

Sentences that leave room for interpretation, after all, according to Sky, FC Bayern has already contacted the Schlotterbeck side. The BVB defender has a contract in Dortmund until 2027. Munich could need a central defender of his quality if Dayot Upamecano does not extend his contract at Säbener Straße.

For BVB, however, the transfer summer of 2026 would be the last chance to make big money with the 25-year-old.

“Now he’s checking the market. I’m quite sure that he won’t extend his contract with Borussia Dortmund relatively quickly,” commented former Dortmund professional Steffen Freund on “Sky 90” about Schlotterbeck’s statements. “And in my view that increases the likelihood that he will leave.”

BVB: Schlotterbeck without prospects in Dortmund?

In addition to FC Bayern, the financially powerful Premier League clubs are potentially logical buyers, according to the 1996 European champions.

“Sky” expert Dietmar Hamann also pointed out that the transfer market was open to Schlotterbeck. “Schlotterbeck can choose the club next summer,” said Hamann. “I don’t see any reason why he should extend it now. The path will probably – I’m assuming – lead somewhere else next summer.”

Since all good experts come in threes, Thomas Helmer also expects that Schlotterbeck will give in. “Whether it’s Bayern, the Premier League, Barcelona or Real Madrid, I don’t know,” Helmer said and asked: “Why should he extend it? No. The prospects in Dortmund are not like those at other clubs.”
