At the 23rd edition of the Hamburg triathlon, the world series again stops in the Hanseatic city, with the mixed World Cup as the highlight. The ARD broadcasts the individual races today and the season live on Sunday.
Today the individual races are about the sprint distance (750 meters swimming, 20 kilometers cycling, 5 kilometers running) for points in the fight for the World Cup title – Hamburg is the fourth of eight stations of the World Triathlon Championship Series. On Sunday, gold, silver and bronze will be awarded at the mixed relay (300 meters swimming, seven kilometers of cycling and 1.75 kilometers.
The German quartet is aiming for the gold triple and wants to benefit from the home advantage. As early as 2023 and 2024, the German triathletes in the Hanseatic city were at the top of the podium. At the Olympic Games in Paris last year, the mixed gold also went to Germany. “Of course we hope that the German quartet will get the title again,” said Martin Engelhardt, President of the German Triathlon Union (DTU).
However, the World Cup leading Lisa Tertsch and returnee Lasse Lasse Lührs can only start from the winning quartet from France on Sunday. Laura Lindemann and Tim Hellwig are missing in the German contingent. France, Great Britain and New Zealand are the strongest competition in the mixed event, a new triumph on the Alster would be surprising in view of the prominent failures.
Olympic champion Tertsch wants to go to the podium
The German hopes in today’s individual races (16.35 and 6.35 p.m., in the ARD live stream) rest on Tertsch. The leading in the World Cup series recently demonstrated its strong form the last week with a win at the World Cup in Tiszaújváros.
“I certainly took a little confidence with me – that all the processes work well that the training worked,” said Tertsch. As a hunted in the World Cup ranking, she feels pressure, but try “but do not let it go too much. That doesn’t help.”
The 26-year-old should have an exciting fight with the French Olympic champion Cassandre Beaubrand, which is also on her heels in the overall ranking.
“Last year I just missed the podium as fourth, it was a bit disappointing. This year it should go to the podium,” said Tertsch.
Lührs “not yet in the form of Paris”
The German men are more in the outsider role. Henry Graf has the best chance of a good placement, for Lührs the placement of the comeback after heel operation “at first. I am happy to be here at all.” He received an invitation from the World Association for the race in Hamburg: “I’m really happy. But I have to admit that I am not yet in the form of Paris.”
Football world champion Littbarski competes
Swimming in the Alster, cycling past the Speicherstadt and running with the destination on the town hall market: In addition to the elite, 8,500 amateurs for the competitions in the sprint, short distance and seasons have also registered. Pierre Littbarski, football world champion from 1990, is there for a selection of the main sponsor on the running route. Tens of thousands of fans are expected on the route on both days.
“The triathlon shows what Olympic games could look like in Hamburg.”
Hamburg’s sports senator Andy Grote (SPD)
The event is particularly important this year in the course of the Hamburg Olympic application. “In over 20 years, the Hamburg triathlon, with its mixture of elite and every man and tenth thousands of fans along the inner city route, has become the world’s largest triathlon and flagship of sport. It shows what Olympic games could look like in Hamburg,” said Hamburg’s sports senator Andy Grote (SPD).
