It is supposed to be a test run for the Olympic bid: Hamburg will again host the Triathlon World Cup in 2027.
Hamburg will host the Triathlon World Cup again in 2027. This was decided by the Executive Board of the World Triathlon Association in Australia. In September 2027, the Hanseatic city is expecting around 4,500 athletes from all over the world.
The program includes individual races in the Elite, Para, U23 and Junior categories as well as sprint and short distance age groups. Aquabike is also on the agenda. Mixed relay competitions are also planned – but not in the elite category. Behind this is a team relay competition in which a team consists of two men and two women who take turns completing a super sprint triathlon.
Traditionally, the Triathlon World Championships begins with the Parade of Nations on Wednesday evening of the event week, followed by four days of competition. The detailed schedule will be published at a later date.
Andy Grote (SPD), Hamburg’s Interior and Sports Senator, sees the event as more than just a sporting highlight: “The World Cup on Jungfernstieg and Binnenalster will also be a first small dress rehearsal for a possible organization of Olympic and Paralympic competitions in the heart of our city.”
Martin Engelhardt, President of the German Triathlon Union, said: “This decision reflects the city’s deep-rooted triathlon tradition and Germany’s unwavering commitment to the sport.” World Triatlohn President Antonio Arimany added: “The fact that Hamburg is taking over the event again is a win for the entire sport of triathlon.”
Hamburg’s triathlon history began in 2002. The city hosted the world championships for the first time in 2007 with participants from 72 nations and over 600,000 spectators. The first Mixed Relay World Championships followed in 2013 with a German home victory.
In 2020, Hamburg was the only venue for a World Cup race under Corona conditions – this also counted as a World Championship. On July 11th and 12th, 2026, the Hanseatic city will again host the World Cup series and the Mixed Relay World Cup.
