At Ironman Hamburg, the European champion is chosen after 3.8 km, 178 km of cycling and a marathon. The duel of the two fastest Ironman women comes. The start was postponed to 6.45 a.m. due to the weather.

Triathlete Laura Philipp is looking forward to her first long-distance race since her World Cup triumph last year. “Every step is to prepare the mind and body for the next big challenge. Let’s go!”, The 38-year-old wrote on Instagram.

In the Hanseatic city, the Heidelberg woman meets Katrina Matthews World Cup, who had pulled her off the triumph in Nice on the running route.

Philipp wants to build on good results

Philipp has the best memories of the Hanseatic city. In her EM triumph 2022, she set up the route record in 8:18:20 hours, in the meantime this brand was even the world’s best time. Matthews snatched her record five weeks ago in her victory in Texas in 8:10:34 hours. Now there is a duel between the two fastest Ironman women.

Philipp showed a strong shape last Sunday at the start of the season on the middle distance, the Ironman 70.3 Kraichgau prevailed with more than four minutes. “Now it is about recovering and giving my body the chance to regenerate. After the finish in the Kraichgau, I didn’t waste a second,” she said in view of the short distance between the two races.

Form test with a view of Hawaii

She emphasized that the start in Hamburg due to her already established qualification for the World Cup in Hawaii on October 11th was also a test of its shape. In any case, she believes “that it will not just be about both of us. There may be a larger group that comes to the second transition zone, and then the whole thing is decided while running,” said Philipp and added: “I think the marathon will be super intense.”

Anne Reischmann should also include the group she suspected. The 33-year-old Ravensburger triumphed two months ago at the Ironman season kick-off in Port Elizabeth in South Africa and explained: “My plan is to concentrate on me, do my thing and only concentrate on the placement over the last 15 kilometers.”

Cross and across Hamburg

In addition to the race for the professional women, there is also a competition for 3,000 hobby athletes. They all have to prepare for an innovation: the goal this year is on the Jungfernstieg and not as usual at the town hall market. The first start should take place at 6 a.m., but was moved somewhat due to the weather.

The swimming route leads through the inland and outside. Then it goes on the bike. The route leads over two rounds from Ballindamm to the west of Hamburg, past the Speicherstadt, the Landungsbrücken, the Reeperbahn and the Altona town hall to Othmarschen. Then it goes back over the Elbchaussee, past the fish market and via St. Georg to the east of Hamburg. There the route leads out into the four and marble in the southeast of Hamburg and back again.

The marathon over 42.195 kilometers takes four laps along the western bank of the Alster and through the city center of Hamburg.
