Top favorite Jan Frodeno ended the Triathlon Roth prematurely. The 2016 winner finished the race after a few kilometers on the running track as the leader. After a partial rupture of the Achilles tendon, the strain was still too great.

First after 3.8 kilometers of swimming, first after 180 kilometers on the bike – and in the end still far from the podium: in tears, the exceptional triathlete Jan Frodeno had to end the Challenge Roth prematurely after a few kilometers on the running track.

Pain in the right Achilles tendon

Problems with the Achilles tendon prevented the 40-year-old’s second win in Roth. Frodeno had already won the challenge in 2016, back then in world record time. After a partial tear of the Achilles tendon, the triathlon in Roth was Frodeno’s first comeback race this year, he only announced his start in Roth at the beginning of June.

Dane Ditlev new leader

Frodeno, a three-time winner of the Ironman Haiwaii, had controlled the race from the front until his early retirement. He was the first to come out of the water after swimming, on the bike a group of five at the top became a duel between Frodeno and the Dane Magnus Ditlev, who is now running towards the first long-distance victory of his career.

Frodeno is looking for his shoes

The spectators experienced a strange scene when switching from cycling to running: Frodeno needed some time in the transition zone because his running shoes could not be found for a moment.
