In 2013, as soon as he ascended the papal throne, Pope Francis visited Lampedusa. Gianfranco Rosi, who shot on the island in 2016 Fire at sea (Golden Bear in Berlin), starts his journey from there, an archival film with unpublished materials and eloquent inserts.
Globalization, inequality, indifference, conflicts, the fate of refugees: these are the themes addressed with stubborn consistency by the Pope in the 53 journeys that the film describes. First pontiff of the American continent, he visits the Brazilian favelas, Cuba, Chile in turmoil due to the economic crisis, Mexico. And then the Central African Republic, Armenia, Japan… An agenda, his own, humanist and political at the same time.
