Winner by a clear margin
Transfermarkt have awarded Argentina’s first player of the season. River Plate’s Julián Álvarez was chosen from a total of 24 players for 2021. 70.9 percent of our users voted him the best Argentine striker, and 58 percent voted for the title of best footballer. Atlanta new signing Thiago Almada (8.7 percent; previously with Vélez Sarsfield) and Franco Armani (5.6 percent; River Plate) finished second and third by a wide margin.
On his 22nd birthday on January 31st, Álvarez was already able to look forward to a permanent transfer to Manchester City in the Premier League and a long-term contract until 2027. Until the summer, the offensive man can continue to prove his qualities on loan for his current employer. The amount of the fee initially varied in various media reports. According to reports, 17 million euros flow for the lively right foot, making Álvarez one of the ten most expensive departures in the history of River Plate.

During the market value update in the Liga Profesional at the beginning of February, Álvarez increased his market value by 3 million to 23 million euros and thus for the fourth time in a row – the reward for his excellent performance data (42 goals in 46 games). In addition to the “Citizens”, Real Madrid, the Milan clubs AC and Inter, Juventus Turin, BVB from Germany, FC Bayern and Bayer Leverkusen as well as Ajax Amsterdam were traded as interested parties.
Álvarez is the first winner of the Transfermarkt award for Argentina’s Liga Profesional, but he’s not the first Argentine to receive it: Valentín Castellanos (23, New York City) recently won it after his superb season in MLS 2021, and Lionel Messi (34, PSG) received it several times for his performances in Spain’s LaLiga.
