Triumph at the French Open
Cheeky saying about father: Zverev with laughter after final success
June 7, 2026 – 10:03 p.mReading time: 3 minutes

The German tennis star gives a moving speech after his success at the French Open – and also makes the Paris audience laugh with several cheeky statements.
It finally worked with the first Grand Slam title for Alexander Zverev. 6:1, 4.6, 6:4, 6:7 (5:7), 6:1 after 4:16 hours in the final against the Italian Flavio Cobolli. The 29-year-old is the first German Grand Slam winner since Boris Becker at the Australian Open in 1996. After the match, the Hamburg native steps up to the microphone – and finds moving words.
- Victory in Paris: Zverev wins first Grand Slam title
- High prize money: That’s how much Zverev received for his first Grand Slam title
The speech verbatim at t-online.
“First of all, I would like to congratulate Flavio (final opponent Flavio Cobolli, editor’s note) on two incredible weeks and his first Grand Slam final. To perform like that in your first Grand Slam final is incredible, not many can do that. I hope from the bottom of my heart that you can lift one of these trophies soon.
I would also like to congratulate his team. Dad (addressed to Cobolli’s father, who also trains him, editor’s note), you are one of the favorite people on the tour, we always have such great conversations. I always enjoy being with you. You deserve such success in the future.
I would also like to thank Amélie (tournament director and ex-player Amélie Mauresmo, editor’s note) on behalf of all the players. For me you are the best tournament director in the world, you do everything to make us feel welcome here. It’s incredible what you’ve achieved here in the last few years, including when it comes to the facilities here. It’s incredible that we now have two courts here that can be covered. So much has changed since you took over and it’s all positive.
“I had the worst moment of my life on this court”
Then I also have to thank the French Tennis Federation, who have made so much possible here, from the ball kids to the linesmen, who put in so much effort and perhaps always forget something. This wouldn’t be possible if everyone didn’t give their all.
