“I had offers from Qatar and Saudi Arabia, but I preferred to say no – just like with the USA,” said Rémy Cabella in mid-March shortly after the termination of his contract with the Russian first division club FK Krasnodar. Since today, Wednesday, it has been clear where the 32-year-old Frenchman will spend his sporting future: at his former club Montpellier HSC. The club from southern France presented the attacking midfielder at noon.
According to the “France Bleu Hérault” Cabella initially signed until the end of the season. After that, players, management and coaches would sit down and have the option of extending the working paper to 2024. When they are eleventh in the table, the former international is one of the most valuable players in the squad: Only captain Téji Savanier (12 million), left winger Stephy Mavididi (10 million) and midfield talent Joris Chotard (10 million) are valued higher than Cabella, who has 8 million euro stands.
Special transfer window: Notable players who left Ukraine and Russia
The right foot comes from Montpellier’s own youth and became French champion with the club in 2012. In 2014 he left HSC for Newcastle United for EUR 10 million and subsequently also played for Olympique Marseille and AS Saint-Étienne – and since 2019 in Krasnodar, which, however, allowed its foreign professionals to play as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine to terminate the applicable contracts. Among others, the German coach Daniel Farke and the Swede Viktor Claesson (30; FC Copenhagen) left the club.
