The rumor mill has been bubbling for days, now it’s official: Borna Sosa is leaving VfB Stuttgart and, somewhat surprisingly, moving to Ajax Amsterdam.

On Friday morning, the signs of the Croatian national player leaving had increased again. Sosa was absent from VfB Stuttgart’s final training session ahead of the Bundesliga game against SC Freiburg (Saturday, 3:30 p.m.). According to information from the “Bild” newspaper, his absence had been agreed with the club. By skipping the practice session, Sosa wanted to avoid a possible injury just before a substitution. On Friday evening it was clear: After five years, Borna Sosa is moving to the Neckar in the direction of the Netherlands.

Social media post on Twitter: Borna Sosa joins Ajax Amsterdam

“I experienced five wonderful years here at VfB that I will never forget. There are so many beautiful memories of this time,” said Sosa. “I’m very happy to be part of such a great club.”

Amsterdam instead of Seville

Sosa has been linked to various clubs over the past few weeks. Recently there have been signs that the Croatian may switch to Sevilla FC. Now, somewhat surprisingly, Sosa is heading to the Dutch Eredivisie. According to the club, the 25-year-old signed a contract until June 2028. According to “Sky” information, the transfer fee should be around ten million euros. This brings about a reunion with the former VfB sports director Sven Mislintatwho now works at Ajax Amsterdam.

Next loss of one top performers

Sosa joined VfB Stuttgart from Dinamo Zagreb in the summer of 2018. In his first Bundesliga season, the Croatian only made twelve appearances due to various injuries, and VfB were relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga at the end of the 2018/19 season. The second season was similarly unsatisfactory for Sosa, when he only made twelve appearances due to health problems (concussion, edema in the knee). In the end, VfB celebrated direct promotion back to the Bundesliga.

In the years that followed, the Croatian international developed into an indispensable player for the Swabians. Sosa stood out again and again, especially as a template provider, his cross runs on the left wing became a strong factor in the Swabians’ offensive game. The left-back prepared a total of 25 goals in the three Bundesliga seasons from 2020/21 to 2022/23 and developed into a top performer at VfB.

Again and again transfer rumours around Borna Sosa

Because of his good performances, Sosa has been in the focus of numerous national and international clubs. The left-back himself toyed with the idea of a change from time to time. And as soon as a transfer window opened, rumors arose about the Croatian’s possible departure. For example, there are said to have been concrete talks with Bayer Leverkusen last winter, but according to media reports the deal fell through due to the transfer fee.

Now an agreement has been reached – with Ajax Amsterdam. After 115 competitive games for VfB Stuttgart, Borna Sosa is moving abroad. After the departures of Wataru Endo to Liverpool and Konstantinos Mavropanos to West Ham United VfB Stuttgart will have to replace another top performer early in the new season.
