Transfer five-pack: Galatasaray bring in Icardi, Mata, Rashica, Demir and Ross

On Deadline Day

Galatasaray Istanbul has once again upped the ante on Turkey’s Deadline Day. As the top club announced on Thursday evening, Mauro Icardi (29) is moving from Paris Saint-Germain to the Bosphorus. Juan Mata (34), ex-Bundesliga professional Milot Rashica (26), Yusuf Demir (19) and Mathias Ross (21) are also coming.

Icardi is drawn to the “lions” on loan for a season, who, according to the club, only pay a salary of 750,000 euros, while the Parisians take over the remaining 6 million euros. Galatasaray is the first stop outside of a top-five league for the Argentine, who is without action this season. His contract with PSG, where he moved from Inter in 2020 for 50 million euros, runs until 2024. The last person without a job was Mata, whose contract with Manchester United was not renewed after more than eight years. The Spaniard signed a working paper in Istanbul until next year, with an option for another. Galatasaray is only his fourth club as a professional.

Rashica is on loan from Norwich to the Turkish record champions for this season. The former Bremen player was relegated to the championship with the “Canaries”, where he last played four games with one assist. Another commitment for the offensive is Demir, who is now leaving Rapid Vienna for good after being loaned to FC Barcelona. Galatasaray will pay €6m transfer fee, making Demir the most expensive deal this summer. The Austrian U19 international received a contract until 2026.

In addition to the four reinforcements for attack, Ross is someone for the center of defence. The Dane is leaving his youth club Aalborg BK for Istanbul, where his contract runs until 2026. Galatasaray announced that a fee of EUR 1.75 million would be due for the defender. In total, the Turks signed 14 new players in the summer of transfers and invested EUR 31.5 million in ten of them. This is offset by income from sales of EUR 12.5 million, which means that Galatasaray has by far the weakest transfer balance.
