Rainy start and a first moment of terror: The new coach Horst Steffen started preparing for the Bundesliga season with Werder Bremen. On Monday, the first unit stood up in grub weather, which striker Marvin Ducksch had to stop after a short time due to injury.

“The first training at a new club is of course special, but I am not excited because I already know that,” Steffen said before the unit: “The boys have the ball again today, it will be about the offensive ideas that we have. A new coach is also accompanied by curiosity, we do our best from the first second.”

“Horny that I am now a Bundesliga coach.”

The successor to Ole Werner headed the training of a Bundesliga team for the first time at the age of 56. Most recently, Steffen worked successfully at SV Elversberg for seven years. “I also enjoyed regional league with Elversberg. And also enjoyed the Landesliga with Kapellen-Erft. I would love to do my work. Nevertheless, there was the situation in which I thought: horny that I am now Bundesliga coach,” said former professional from Borussia Mönchengladbach.

“Petition in the Wade” – Ducksch use in Verden questionable

On Saturday (3.30 p.m.) the first test at the top division FC Verden 04 is coming up. Striker Ducksch, who could leave the club before the start of the season, was brought from the training ground with a GolfCart shortly after the start. “It cleaned in the calf, we have to see what comes out,” said Steffen, who then demanded an intensive unit afterwards in rainy weather.

Wöber so far the only newcomer

It was “a gallop”, said the coach, “but should already have something to do with our new principles.” The 56-year-old team, who took a long time for autographs and photos with fans after training, is not yet complete.

So far, the green-whites in defenders Maximilian Wöber from the English Premier League promoted Leeds United have presented a new addition. The Austrian is loan for a year. “We still have one or two candidates who can add, in the front area and on the right side can still happen,” said Steffen.

So far, more has happened in Bremen: Milos Veljkovic (Roter Stern Belgrade), Oliver Burke (Union Berlin), Anthony Jung (SC Freiburg), Derrick Köhn (Galatasaray), André Silva (RB Leipzig) and Issa Kaboré (Manchester City) are no longer part of the squad that is a training camp from August 22nd to 1. August Zillertal keeps. “We still have a trunk and if there is not too much away, I am convinced that we have a good team,” said Steffen.
