They could be called the “Anal OG Dogs” or the “Analog Dogs” – it ultimately doesn’t matter, because on the basis of a demo tape, these teenagers get the unlikely chance to appear as Green Day’s opening act on New Year’s Eve. That’s the gist of the trailer for “Nimrods: A Green Day Comedy”, a road trip film in which not everything goes smoothly. The cinema release is August 14th. Director and screenwriter Lee Kirk drew inspiration from Green Day’s early years – the period when the band toured in a van before “Dookie” catapulted them into another league.
“It’s about Green Day’s experiences on the road back then, in that early phase of the DIY spirit,” Armstrong told The Hollywood Reporter last September when the film, titled “New Years Rev,” premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.
“We played everywhere we were let, and a lot of shows got canceled because the cops showed up. But there’s also the mudslinging at Woodstock. Lee did a great job of weaving in all those elements from our past.”
The film stars Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman, Ryan Foust and Mckenna Grace – and of course Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool himself. Jenna Fischer, Angela Kinsey and Fred Armisen as well as other guests also make appearances.
Armstrong’s dream of making a band film
“I always wanted to do a Green Day movie,” Armstrong told The Hollywood Reporter. “My God, from the beginning – all of my heroes have made films, whether it was the Ramones’ Rock ‘n’ Roll High School, the Beatles’ A Hard Day’s Night or the Who’s Quadrophenia. I wanted to do the same thing.” In 2025, Armstrong also expressed hope that a film adaptation of the Broadway musical “American Idiot” might one day be possible.
