The world mourns the loss of “Godzilla vs. Kong” actress Kaylee Hottle. The deaf actress tragically lost her life at the age of 18, as confirmed by her father.
It was a father delivering the worst news of his life, in sign language, on camera for nearly 23 minutes. Joshua Hottle sat down on Tuesday with his smartphone and announced to the world that his daughter Kaylee had passed away. The young actress, known for her role as Jia in “Godzilla vs. Kong,” died in a car accident in Maryland. She was just 18 years old.
According to the celebrity news portal TMZ, which reported the news first, her father stated that she died early Tuesday morning, U.S. time. Initially, he had heard about a serious accident, and shortly after, he received the second call: Kaylee’s heart had stopped on the way to the hospital. He had to fly in from Texas to identify her body.
Tragic Car Accident
As reported by local authorities, Kaylee Hottle was a passenger in a Honda Accord when the driver veered off the road and crashed into a ditch. The Texas School for the Deaf, which Hottle was attending in her senior year, confirmed her death in an Instagram post and urged respect for the family’s privacy, requesting that the circumstances of the accident not be speculated upon.
The Girl Who Communicated with King Kong
In 2021, she portrayed Jia, an indigenous girl from Skull Island, who communicates with the giant ape Kong—not with words but through sign language. In 2024, Hottle returned for “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.”
Her co-stars from “Godzilla vs. Kong” learned sign language for her. Hollywood star Alexander Skarsgård shared during the film’s promotional events that he and Rebecca Hall learned American Sign Language to communicate with her between takes.
Outside of the monster films, Hottle also appeared in an episode of the “Magnum P.I.” reboot, playing a character named Joon. Kaylee’s legacy as a talented actress will be remembered by many.
