The fence stopped deer from one dune area to the other to look for food and reproduce. There were therefore too many animals in both nature reserves. This led to damage to nature and surrounding bulb fields, and also caused traffic accidents. That is why many deer are shot in the winter months.

16,000 deer shot

More than 16,000 deer have been shot in the last ten years. In both areas there are now a few hundred still running according to Fauna Management Unit Noord-Holland. The figures are in reality higher. Not all deer can be counted because of poor visibility, for example.

The number of deer is no longer a danger to nature and traffic. That’s why the gate can go.
