Tour of the Basque Country: Belgian Evenepoel now ahead

Zamudio (dpa) – The Belgian top talent Remco Evenepoel has taken the lead in the overall standings in the Tour of the Basque Country.

Third place nine seconds behind day’s winner Carlos Rodriguez from Spain was enough for the 22-year-old to slip on the yellow jersey. Slovenian Vuelta champion Primoz Roglic, who had previously led, only finished with the peloton after 163.8 kilometers between Zamudio and Mallabia.

Going into the final stage, Evenepoel leads the overall standings by two seconds over Colombian Daniel Martinez, who finished second on Friday. The six-day tour ends on Saturday with the 135.7-kilometer queen stage with seven climbs between Éibar and Arrate.
