Tour of Spain: Defending champion Roglic gives up after a fall at the Vuelta

Status: 07.09.2022 12:32 p.m

The Slovenian cycling star Primoz Roglic has to give up the Tour de France prematurely after a fall.

The defending champion did not compete in the 17th stage in Aracena after falling just before the finish the day before. This was announced by his team Jumbo-Visma. Roglic was second in the overall standings and has been catching up on Belgian leader Remco Evenepoel over the past few days.

Sport director Addy Engels provided information about the extent of the injuries: Roglic had neither broken anything nor suffered a concussion. However, the bruises and the associated pain are too great. The day before, Roglic had crossed the finish line with his right arm and leg covered in blood. The 32-year-old had won the Vuelta in the past three years and would have drawn level with record winner Roberto Heras with a fourth win. Roglic had to give up a few days after a fall at the Tour de France in July.
