Tour de France Femmes : Van Vleuten wins final stage and takes overall victory

Status: 07/31/2022 6:13 p.m

Time trial Olympic champion Annemiek van Vleuten won the women’s Tour de France, which was revived this year, after a triumphant ride and thus made the double perfect after the Giro victory.

Like the day before, the 39-year-old Dutchwoman outperformed the competition at the showdown on the ramps to La Super Planche des Belles Filles on Sunday (07/31/2022) and was impressively crowned overall winner. After eight stages and 1033.8 kilometers, Van Vleuten was 3:48 minutes ahead of compatriot Demi Vollering, who finished second, 30 seconds behind.

The last three kilometers of the eighth stage of the Tour de France Femmes.

Lippert ended up in 14th place

The national champion Liane Lippert finished tenth and 14th overall. Lippert belonged to a leading group that drove ahead of the field for a long time and mastered the first very difficult climb to the Ballon d’Alsace before the favorites. On the tough final climb, the group had no chance of winning the day.

Van Vleuten cannot be stopped even by a defect

Van Vleuten laid the foundation for the Tour triumph on Saturday when she completed a 62-kilometer solo ride on the mountain stage through the Vosges and took the day’s victory with a lead of more than three minutes. On Sunday, she was braked by a defect and had to continue on a teammate’s bike, but she only let that stop her for a short time.

Lots of fans along the route

Van Vleuten, who wants to end her successful career at the end of 2023, added another great success this season to her Giro victory. In addition, the three-time world champion on the road also won the classic Liège-Bastogne-Liège and took second place in the Tour of Flanders, the Flèche Wallonne and the Strade Bianche.

As with the men this year, many fans followed the eighth and final stage on Sunday. There, Lennard Kämna missed the stage win by 100 meters when he was caught up by top stars Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard shortly before the finish line.
