The ambitions at Tottenham are great, but the reality is different: the London club is fighting to stay in the league – the third coach this season is supposed to bring about the turnaround.

Top English club Tottenham Hotspur presented a successor two days after parting ways with coach Igo Tudor. As the Premier League club announced on Tuesday, Roberto De Zerbi will take over the vacant position.

The Italian is euphoric in the club’s announcement. “I am very pleased to be joining this fantastic football club, one of the largest and most prestigious in the world,” he is quoted as saying. He believes in a successful future. “In all my discussions with the club’s management, the goal for the future was clear: to build a team capable of great success and to achieve this with a style of football that excites and excites our fans. I am here because I believe in this goal and have signed a long-term contract to do everything I can to make it happen.”

First of all, the fight to stay in the league is on the agenda for De Zerbi. After 31 match days, the club from north London is in 17th place in the table, just one point ahead of relegation.

The Italian is the third Tottenham coach this season. The Dane Thomas Frank took over the reigning Europa League winner in the summer and had to leave at the beginning of February. Tudor took over but only lasted seven games. Across all competitions, the Croatian achieved a points yield of 0.57 per game.

This is De Zerbi’s second job in England. From 2022 to 2024 he worked as a coach at Brighton & Hove Albion. He was most recently the coach of Olympique Marseille, and the collaboration ended in February after almost a year and a half together.
