Top form only against FC Bayern, BVB and Co.? That’s why Gladbach has two faces

Wins against RB Leipzig, BVB and recently even FC Bayern – and still only eighth place in the table. Borussia Mönchengladbach is showing two opposing faces in the Bundesliga this season. Gladbach sports director Roland Virkus has an explanation.

Borussia Mönchengladbach showed their gala face against FC Bayern last weekend. Captain Lars Stindl (13th), Jonas Hofmann (55th) and Marcus Thuram (84th) gave the German record champions three goals. The guests from Munich only scored two goals in Borussia Park through Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (35′) and Mathys Tel (90’+3′).

“It’s really good for us, for the table and the mood. We were brave. The lads put in an exceptional performance,” said Gladbach’s head coach Daniel Farke of his protégés’ coup against Bayern Munich.

However, the table situation does not look too rosy from Borussia’s point of view. In eighth place, Gladbach are already nine points behind Eintracht Frankfurt in sixth place. The international competition 2023/2024 is likely to take place again without the foal eleven.

Gladbach: victories against RB Leipzig, BVB and FC Bayern

It’s not due to Gladbach’s performance against the top teams in the league. In addition to FC Bayern, from whom Farke’s team drew 1-1 in the first leg in Munich, they also won against RB Leipzig (3-0) and BVB (4-2). In addition, there was the 5-2 shooting match in the Rhenish derby against 1. FC Köln.

Why are there inexplicable dropouts at the same time, like against Hertha BSC (1: 4), FC Augsburg (0: 1) or VfL Bochum (1: 2)? Those responsible for Gladbach at least have an explanation for the significantly better performance in the highlight games.

“The senses are perhaps more sharpened against such opponents. But it’s not always just about running and fighting. It’s important that we make fewer mistakes in the other games. We did that properly in the first phase of the season – and there we have to come back,” sporting director Ronald Virkus told Sport Bild.
