Jannik Sinner fights with pain on the elbow in the round of 16 of Wimbledon and is about to get out. But then his opponent suddenly disappears into the catacombs.

Drama around Grigor Dimitrov: The Bulgarian tennis professional gave up for the fifth time in a row at a Grand Slam tournament due to injury-and that in a 2-0 set lead against the stricken world ranking list of Jannik Sinner. The number 21 in the round of 16 in Wimbledon was on the best way to a fist -thick surprise when he suddenly put himself onto the right pectoral muscle at 6: 3, 7: 5, 2: 2 after a surcharge and went down with a face -distorted face.

Sinner was accordingly surprised, he hurried to the side of his opponent and asked about his condition. Tennis icon Roger Federer also looked horrified in the Royal Box. Dimitrow was treated on his chair, shook his head and disappeared into the catacombs for a medical timeout. The 34-year-old came out in tears a little later and gave up. He could hardly lift his arm to give the referee’s hand.

Sinner moved to the quarter-finals of the classic lawn for the fourth time in a row. “I don’t know what to say. He is an incredible player, we all saw it today,” said Sinner, adding: “He had so much misfortune in the past few years, he is a friend of mine. He deserves to play in the next round. I hope he will recover quickly.” That is not “the end of what we all wanted to see. It’s very sad.” He takes it “not as a win,” said Sinner.

Dimitrow had already given up in the past four major tournaments. Sinner, who had been slightly injured in the first set on the right elbow and in front of the stand, now meets the American Ben Shelton, who defeated Lorenzo Sonego from Italy in four sets in the top eight.

In the first game against Dimitrow, Sinner slipped at 40:40 and had stretched out his elbow. As a result, the Bulgarian dominated the game. In the second set, the Italian took a medical timeout and swallowed painkillers. Then he benefited from the task of his opponent.

Sinner can continue to hope for his first final participation in the classic lawn, but injured himself on the elbow. There is an MRI examination on Tuesday, he said. “Then we see if it’s serious.” The South Tyrolean now meets the American Ben Shelton, who defeated Sinner’s compatriot Lorenzo Sonego in four sets.

On the way to the round of 16, Sinner had not given a sentence and only 17 games in total. With this he had undercut the record in the Wimbledon story of the men’s profit tennis by Federer (19).
