Tool is negotiating a concert series at Sphere Las Vegas. Danny Carey confirms talks for 2027. At the same time, the band is working on a new album.
Tool are in talks for a concert series at the Sphere, the futuristic venue in Las Vegas. Drummer Danny Carey confirmed this in a recent interview.
The progressive metal band from Los Angeles sees itself as an ideal candidate for the technologically advanced location known for its immersive visual experiences. The group is reportedly planning to pair the residency with the release of a new album, possibly in 2027.
“We are the perfect band for this”
Carey explained in an interview with the music magazine “Spiral Out” that Tool had already contacted those responsible for Sphere. “We are the perfect band for this,” said the musician with conviction, referring to the visual orientation of Tool’s live shows. There had previously been speculation about a possible appearance by Metallica in the Sphere.
Noting that Tool is a “very cinematic band,” particularly in terms of the visual spectacles of their live performances, Carey agreed with Spiral Out: “Yeah, we put a lot of emphasis on that.”
New album announced for 2027
The band is currently working on material for the follow-up to “Fear Inoculum,” which was released in 2019. “We’re working on a lot of new Tool songs right now,” Danny Carey told Blabbermouth. The goal is a release in 2027 – eight years after the last studio album and the first in five years.
Technical challenges of the Sphere
However, implementing a Sphere residency poses considerable demands, Carey explained in the interview. “The preparation is pretty intense,” said the drummer. It is a “very expensive undertaking” in which profit can only be expected after several shows. The amortization takes a correspondingly long time.
Carey has already visited the Sphere for a tour, but has not yet seen a full show at the location, the drummer also revealed. “It’s unbelievable. I was almost afraid of heights just by looking at it,” he said, describing his impressions of the innovative event hall.
The Sphere features 16,000 square meters of LED interior space and is considered one of the most technologically advanced concert halls in the world.
Progressive metal for over three decades
Maynard James Keenan, guitarist Adam Jones, bassist Justin Chancellor and drummer Danny Carey established themselves as one of the most influential progressive metal bands of their time from Los Angeles in the 1990s with albums like “Undertow” (1993) and “Ænima” (1996).
And with “Lateralus” (2001) and “10,000 Days” (2006), the group solidified their status as an innovative force in heavy metal. After a 13-year break between studio albums, Tool returned in 2019 with Fear Inoculum. So it’s time for something new.
Maynard James Keenan: Between Puscifer and A Perfect Circle
Parallel to Tool, Maynard James Keenan is also currently active with several projects. For example, he and his band Puscifer are releasing their new record “Normal Isn’t” on February 6th.
And with A Perfect Circle, his second long-term band project, he is also going on tour in this country in the summer. There is a concert in Munich, at the Zenith, on June 9th. A show will follow in Düsseldorf on June 21st, in the Mitsubishi Electric Hall and in the Zitadelle Spandau in Berlin, the final German gig will follow on July 1st, 2026.
