Too cold in winter, sweltering hot in summer: this Medemblik school still has single glass

The director of the Maria Bernadette school in Medemblik is hopeful that his school will finally receive money from the municipality next year to carry out the necessary renovations. His students are still in an outdated building that does not meet modern requirements. “Children complain to their teachers: it’s drafty here.”

The central heating boiler should actually be running at full capacity at 5 o’clock in the morning. “Otherwise it will still be fresh in the classroom at half past eight,” says director Bart Rosa Bian. “Double glazing would make a difference, we just have single glass. En in the summer it is sweltering hot.”

According to him, this influences the quality of education. “If children are in class with 30 degrees, they don’t get fit.”

Hard sound

A more important problem is that, according to the director, the school is a ‘big sound box’. “All stone, started and tiles. The slightest noise produced by children is extremely loud in the classrooms and corridors.”

The case of the Maria Bernadette fits into the rural picture. Earlier this week, the NOS as a result of research by Bouwend Nederland that half of the schools in our country need renovation or new construction and are struggling with problems such as mould, moisture, drafts and too little fresh air. As a result, they do not meet the modern requirements for sustainability, health and ventilation.

Money is therefore needed for renovation or new construction, and the school has asked the municipality for this in the budget for 2023. In three months it will be known whether the council approves the plans. But it will be exciting whether the Medemblik wallet is sufficient enough, since the municipality has been struggling with financial problems for a long time.

In addition, the Maria Berrnadette is not the only school which needs a revamp. “The Township medem look is bigger than just the city center,” explains Rosa Bian. “There are three schools on the list to be tackled, but you also have schools in Andijk and Zwaagdijk of which I say: ‘wow, they are also nominated to be renovated.'”

‘Come on!’

Minor maintenance has been done to the Maria Bernadette school. Rosa Bian: “Last year we had the walls painted for a fresh look. And we installed three new central heating boilers, while we know that things will be very different in a few years. We had to, winter is coming .”

The director is hopeful that plans for the long term can finally be started next year. Then, according to him, the children cantwo or three years really in a renovated building. “But it’s a tough battle. We hope that the municipality can raise the money. I understand the split they are in right now, but on the other hand I also say, ‘Guys, come on, education is the most important thing there is, go for it!'”
