Most recently, Alexander Zverev had revealed mental problems and announced changes in his life. One could now be in the coaching area. A prominent name is traded.
Alexander Zverev’s sporting career could face a crucial turn. According to information from Pay TV broadcaster Sky, Toni Nadal, long-time success coach and uncle of Rafael Nadal, new coach of the Hamburgers.
Zverev is currently in Mallorca and trains in the Rafa Nadal Academy. As Sky reports, it is conceivable that Rafael Nadal himself will continue to take on an advisory role in the future and support the 28-year-old as a kind of mentor. Last Friday, Zverev had canceled his participation in the ATP tournament in Gstaad, Switzerland, for personal reasons.
He emphasized that something had to change in him – regardless of sport. It is planned to take a break first. At the Masters 1000 tournament in Toronto at the end of July, he wants to return to the tour and announce further details about his future plans.
So far, Zverev has mainly been trained by his father Alexander Zverev Senior. As a manager and guide, his brother Mischa is always close to his side. “The father and the brother did it excellently, but it wasn’t good enough for the last step,” Tennis icon Boris Becker had already criticized against Novak Djokovic after the quarter-finals at the French Open.
Becker’s criticism had triggered upset with Hamburg. “I think if it goes well for me, I always do everything right. And if things go badly, everyone is always very, very smart. Unfortunately, Boris is part of it,” Zverev countered at the tournament in Stuttgart.
In the past, Zverev had already worked with coaches outside of his family: Juan Carlos Ferrero, Ivan Lendl, David Ferrer and most recently Sergi Bruguera. “But they all left the boat after half a year. And that has had his reasons,” said Becker in the podcast “Becker Petkovic”.
Now Zverev could take another attempt with Nadal. According to the German Press Agency, the management of the world number in third place was initially not to be achieved for a statement.
