In an interview that Graham Bensinger led with Tom Hanks via video chat as part of his show “In Depth with Graham Bensinger”, the actor divides various stories from his life and remembers individual experiences during his long career.
Among other things, Hanks tells of the difficulties that occurred during the shooting of “Forrest Gump” in 1994. In this context, the actor said that the key scene, in which Hanks’ title figure runs through the United States, could almost have been turned.
The reason: she was just too expensive. For this reason, the director Robert Zemeckis asked him for help at the time.
A profit participation that has paid off
“He said, ‘Well, this run will cost so much dollar,” recalls Hanks about his words. And that it wasn’t exactly a little money. However, Hanks agreed to participate in the costs. He and the director would then have decided to share the amount. However, they made this to one condition: they paid the money to Paramount, but they asked the production company to have a higher profit sharing. In retrospect, Hanks says the studio: “That was good for us!”
But it didn’t stay with this one scene. Hanks says that he and the filmmaker also shared the costs at another occasion. The actor remembers a scene in which it was said that the weather was so bad that they could not get insurance cover for it. Then the studio is said to have meant: “So you can’t turn.” But Hanks and Zemeckis were not satisfied with this: “We said: ‘We will pay for the insurance company. And we did that.”
Tom Hanks found no access to the role
But not only financing caused difficulties. Hanks also told the podcast how he initially had problems putting himself into his role. This led so far that the entire film material of the first three days could not be used.
Zemeckis said to him: “Listen, I know what you are going to do. I know how nervous you are and what inhibitions it can be with before we get in the right mood. But we will have to delete these first three days because I think you have not yet made it. You have not yet found any access to the role.”
“Don’t strict like it!”
Then Hanks would have agreed. In fact, he had no feeling for the figure, he just didn’t get in. However, the director gave him the crucial tip. He is said to have said to him: “Don’t strict like it. Try not to force it.” And from then on everything calmed down. From one moment to the next, it would suddenly have worked. And there was an Oscar for that!
